The Two Gentlemen of Verona is the story of a friendship tested by a love affair, or two, or three, or on second thought, four. All these tests last a lifetime, or a death. The latter Shakespeare did not include in the story, perhaps because he wrote it as a comedy. Yet somehow it crept into the transcript with insidious naturalness, as a fitting punishment for one who only wants to enjoy the ease of love but despises the difficulty of fidelity.
